Bright Green Summit: Trade and Investment Panel

On Monday, November 6, AmCham hosted the first of seven panels leading up to the Bright Green Summit which will take place on January 24, 2024. The Trade & Investment panel discussion was hosted by the Mistra Center for Sustainable Markets (Misum) at the Stockholm School of Economics. Expertly moderated by Torkel Strömsten, Associate Professor at SSE, the panel featured representatives from the U.S. and Swedish governments and the private sector:

  • Marianne Drain, Senior Commercial Officer, U.S. Embassy Stockholm

  • Erik Savola, Nordic Banking Head and Country Officer for Sweden, Citi

  • Pernilla Liljeson, Export and Investment Promotion, Ministry of Foreign Affairs

  • Mathias Wikström, CEO and Founder, Doconomy

The panelists emphasized the importance of public-private collaboration, putting forward the private sector as a leader in the transition towards the green transition. The private sector has the power to encourage and guide policymakers in adapting more efficient strategies for the fight against climate change. Notable examples include an emphasis on transparency and access to data. Furthermore, the government’s role in creating an advantageous market and transparent regulatory framework cannot be understated. Through investing in transformative industries as well as facilitating research and development, policymakers can enable the transition towards a more sustainable economy.

In advance of COP28 in November and December 2023, the panelists discussed the importance of setting a clear narrative and a robust, streamlined set of rules. A commitment to transparency and competition should be underlined by a positive outlook on the possibilities lying ahead of us. Instead of fixating on differences, there is a pressing need to come together and highlight success stories and effective solutions.

We’d like to thank our panelists, moderator and all attending for contributing to an enriching and insightful discussion. Upcoming panel discussions on Life Sciences, Agriculture and Consumer Goods, as well as Mobility, Digitalization and Infrastructure take place on November 28 and 29 respectively. Sign up today!
