Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson Announces Major Cabinet Reshuffle
On September 10, 2024, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson revealed significant changes in his cabinet during the opening of the 2024/2025 Riksdag session. The reshuffle follows Foreign Minister Tobias Billström’s departure and Minister for EU Affairs Jessika Roswall’s move to Brussels, marking the first major reshuffle during this term.
Key Appointments in the New Cabinet
Maria Malmer Stenergard has been appointed as the new Minister for Foreign Affairs. Stenergard, who has been Sweden’s Minister for Migration since 2022, is recognized for her expertise in handling migration issues, especially during Sweden’s EU Presidency. However, she lacks foreign policy experience, which will be crucial in her new role. Her appointment strengthens her position as a potential future leader of the Moderate Party.
Jessica Rosencrantz will take on the role of Minister for EU Affairs. A member of the Riksdag since 2010 and previously chair of its EU Committee, Rosencrantz has a solid political background but has faced internal party challenges. Her new position places her at the forefront of Sweden’s EU policies.
Benjamin Dousa, the former CEO of Företagarna, will serve as the Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade. With a background in economics and leadership in the Moderate Youth League, Dousa brings experience in business and economic policy to his new portfolio.
Johan Forssell has been named the new Minister for Migration, while Johan Pehrson and Mats Persson have swapped portfolios. Pehrson will now serve as Minister for Education, and Persson will take over as Minister for Employment and Integration.
